Character
Name: Toothless
Appearance: the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. and more death.

Canon: How to Train Your Dragon
History: They're not what we think they are.
Canon point: For consistency, Post Episode 20 or Riders of Berk.
Personality: Toothless is a dragon, and that should never be forgotten. Many times, he acts on his instincts, which can be as deadly for others as much as it can save someone's life. However, he is intelligent and complex. He begins in the series as distrusting and seemingly a loner, to ending up loyal to the ones who earn his trust, protective, and also someone who has just as much fun pulling off wild stunts as a certain Viking.

Toothless will always be someone whose trust must be earned in different degrees, and his willingness to cooperate depends on how far that trust goes. By the time Riders of Berk takes place, most of the Vikings have shown that they aren't the threat they had been. Berk has changed for the better, hence, Toothless isn't hissing and attacking everything in sight.

Toothless is also very intelligent, often interacting with Hiccup in particular with small gestures and nods to communicate his understanding and opinions on the topics, such as when he demands for Hiccup to eat the regurgitated fish. Other times, his methods aren't so subtle, particularly when he's annoyed. Toothless is very good at conveying when he is unimpressed, such as when Astrid first discovers Hiccup has been hiding a dragon, or his annoyance, such as a tail-smack to the face when Hiccup refuses to take them on their daily sunset flight.

While Toothless is reserved, preferring to hang out in the background when those in the dragon academy get together to talk, that does not mean he doesn't understand what's going on around him. Any misconceptions on that matter are disproven by the fact that he understands what an apology is and can choose to alter his behavior after the matter, which will be discussed more in-depth later. Toothless is simply someone who values his solitude to some degree. During the movie, he spent most of his time in the cove with Hiccup, and before that, no one had ever seen a Night Fury. He probably isn't as comfortable around large crowds, especially if the crowd involves a lot of Vikings. He's comfortable with the companionable silence he shares with Hiccup, words spoken from his friend without feeling like there needs to be anything said.

Toothless is someone who is in touch with his surroundings. Hiccup's scream miles away? He'll climb his way out of the cove to run to it. He's often the first to react to any sudden changes in the environment, such as when the rock wall closes in on him, Hiccup, and the others in Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Young Man. He's very keen to the physical world around him--the sights, sounds, and smells. He's quick to notice the knife Hiccup has concealed beneath his vest in the film, and for a brief moment perceives Hiccup as a threat because of the weapon. He's often seen sniffing new people or dragons, especially if something is off about them.

Toothless is creative and resourceful. He observes Hiccup drawing him, recognizes that Hiccup is indeed drawing him, and then creates tools out of what he can find--a tree branch and the grass at his feet--to draw his first ever picture of Hiccup. Both creativity and resourcefulness are generally viewed as signs of intelligence, which tie in with what was mentioned before. When Hiccup first smiles at him, he creates the same gesture, and then uses is repeatedly around other people he likes, such as Astrid.

Toothless is highly protective. This is noted to be both a instinctual dragon trait in "Animal House", as well as a trait that is importantly his own. Out of everyone, Toothless is most protective of Hiccup, viciously fighting anything that seems to threaten Hiccup, including Hiccup's own father in the movie. When Toothless enters his protective mode, he's set on defending what's dear to him at any cost, making it very difficult to stop him, and very dangerous to be on the receiving end. The only thing that seems to make Toothless listen and calm down at all is Hiccup, whose respect and trust is held above anyone else.

To some extent, Toothless is shown to be protective of others who haven't necessarily earned his trust, if he feels the one he's protecting is significantly weaker than the attacker. In Dragon Flower, Toothless snarls and is ready to hurt Trader Johann for smacking a Terrible Terror, and it's only Hiccup who manages to calm him down enough to save the man from any injury. Generally, if it's not a threat, not fish, and it's not annoying him, Toothless will probably protect them. Toothless is kind and encourages a lamb to take shelter by the fire he and the other dragons made in Animal House. Even if Toothless is annoyed, he shows great restraint, providing that the source of the strife is in fact just an annoyance and nothing else. When a Terrible Terror tries stealing his fish in the film, Toothless is able to create a small enough shot of fire to stun it, without hurting it long-term. Toothless does end up getting into a fight with Torch, a baby dragon found in The Terrible Twos, but it's not a fight to the death and for the most part, he's wary of Torch because he doesn't want Torch's mother to come after Hiccup. Just because Toothless is capable of great violence, doesn't mean he likes violence for the sake of it. However, it's best to note that should anyone do so much as glare as the ones he holds dear or threaten him, and he'll act on those instincts and attack.

Toothless always tries to look out for his friends. At times, his actions can surprise people, giving them the impression that he's being impulsive, when really he's feels they don't realize what's best for them so he's doing it himself since they won't. In Gift of the Night Fury, Toothless is upset when Hiccup loses a memento of his Mother's, his helmet, to the icy waters, but with Hiccup demanding that they return for it later, he lets the matter drop. The new tail fin Hiccup makes that enables Toothless to fly on his own is the perfect opportunity to go rescue Hiccup's helmet, because he believes Hiccup won't bother to do it himself fast enough. Toothless does leave once the tail fin is attached, but he comes back as soon as he finds the helmet. As soon as he's done using the tail fin, he destroys it to show Hiccup that sharing the sky with his friend is more important than being able to fly alone. Toothless has come a long way from being the loner he was at the beginning of the first film, to having Hiccup as a best friend today.

Toothless might be incredibly loyal, but he is strong-willed, and even stubborn at times. Toothless doesn't immediately listen to Hiccup's demands to help convince Astrid to like him, spinning in the air and generally making it a terrifying experience for her. He needs an apology, an admission that what she thinks about him and other dragons is wrong, before he chooses to give her any reason to believe her apology. Toothless just wants to be trusted before he trusts someone else. It's only fair. He refuses to allow Hiccup to pet him until Hiccup looks to the ground, holding up his palm out for Toothless to meet when he wanted, which he does.

Toothless also is very prideful about certain things. His pride can sometimes get to the point where it becomes dangerous, such as in What Flies Beneath, when he consistently refused any attempts of help made on Hiccup's part to help him fly so he would be on even ground against an old enemy known as the Whispering Death. His pride ends up endangering him, and putting Hiccup's life at risk at the end--despite it being Hiccup's choice to walk off the cliff. While friendship does win out in this situation, it shows that sometimes Toothless is just as inflexible a listener as the Vikings on Berk can be, and that at times, his pride makes things take a turn for the worse.

Toothless can be playful and fun as much as he can be the deadly Night Fury he was thought to be. Toothless loves the ever-changing beauty of the sky, and the freedom it gives him. Toothless recognizes flying means just as much to Hiccup as it does to him. The viking is a natural in the air, and as best friends, they're often soaring through the sky. They easily plan new maneuvers to try out, whether it's Hiccup jumping over a bridge of rock and Toothless catching him, or something more complex. When Toothless feels that Hiccup isn't taking him out flying enough, he'll show his impatience, and when it's been too long, his displeasure. He also likes small games. Chasing a flickering light around will keep him entertained for hours (just make sure to do this outside). He's quite good at enjoying life in the moment.

Toothless can be full of energy, especially when he's flying, but he has no trouble napping in the middle of the day, or just relaxing when he feels at ease (unlike Hiccup, who likes to work on new inventions well into the night). Toothless still maintains a certain sense of awareness of his surroundings, but he can become lethargic, with a nearly cat-like laziness when he wants to, curling up to rest for a short time.

Gobber once mentions that Dragon emotions are complex, and for Toothless, this is very much true. Toothless is warm, playful, spontaneous, and loyal, but he's still a Dragon, and an intelligent one at that. It all depends on whether someone's earned his trust, and whether or not he thinks of them as a threat. He might seem too unpredictable at times, but generally, he's doing what he feels is right, without giving much explanation on the matter.

Powers/Special Abilities: Toothless has a plethora of abilities. Sometimes it feels like they just keep inventing new ones for him to have because night furies are cool. Toothless is fast, and accurate with his shot ability, making him perfect for dive-bombing quick targets. He has great control over his plasma blasts, which are purple fire shots that can be helpful (such as when lighting up a dark space), or not so helpful if you're the one on the other end. As a Night Fury, Toothless has basically been made for survival. His high senses don't simply stop at hearing or smell, no, he can also use echolocation as seen in We Are Family Pt. 1, and sonar both for locating and communication. He also has a pretty sweet set of retractable teeth. No toothaches for him!

As for how his abilities will be affected, Toothless' echolocation and sonar will be muted, and occasionally go haywire, making it more difficult for him to locate anything. His senses will be heightened, to the point where he sometimes imagines things that actually aren't there. His plasma shots will be much more powerful, making them difficult, and even dangerous, to control. They could come in handy, but they could also be a risk to him and anyone nearby.

Inventory: Toothless travels light:
1.) Brown leather saddle
1.) The equipment paired with the saddle, a series of cables and stirrups to operate his--
1.) Red prosthetic tail fin

Greatest Fear: Toothless has many fears--not being able to fly again, eels, lightning, the Red Death in the past, losing his family, but his greatest fear would be losing Hiccup, who above anyone else, is his family. As mentioned before, he's quick to become agitated and aggressive any time he so much as feels Hiccup might be threatened, and nothing, not even the steep rock walls of the cove, will prevent him from coming to his aid. To put it into a fight or flight perspective, when faced with his fears, Toothless fights. He'll hiss, get up on his hind legs, bare his teeth and shriek. He'll use his speed to tackle dragons twice or three times his size, clawing at their scales. Toothless is very protective of Hiccup, but has mellowed out. Sort of. With new, unfamiliar situations, he tends to fall back on the same reactions.

How is your character appropriate for this game? Toothless is a dragon. He's not going to be easily shaken, and if he is upset, he doesn't cower. He lived through a war between humans and Vikings that only recently ended, so he's seen violence on both sides. He and Hiccup managed to finally destroy the dragon that had him and the other dragons living under its control, always with a nagging fear that he might be the one to be eaten the next time he entered the lair. He's probably had to fly off, just nearly evading death more than once. He's not new to horror. Sure, it's a different kind of horror, but Toothless has managed fine in the past, and he'll continue to do the same. His natural protective streak could benefit other people as well.
Rooming request section: Joe West. That's pretty much it.
Year/Position: I'm pretty sure this doesn't apply to him, but he'd be about the same age as Hiccup.

AU Specific Section
Feel free to ignore if you aren't writing a character into the Disney_Academy AU setting
AU history Most of Toothless' history remains the same, up until the point the Mist began taking over Berk. While others argued over whether or not Hiccup would go to the Academy, Toothless kept a wary eye on the Mist, becoming more agitated and uncomfortable by each passing hour. He was skeptical over Hiccup's invitation to the Academy. Yet when Hiccup decided to go, Toothless was quick to leave Berk and tag along. While he had his own reservations about leaving, there was no way he would willingly let Hiccup go off alone. He couldn't stand the thought of practically being a sea away from his best friend; Berk simply wouldn't be the same without him. And if Hiccup were to end up in trouble, how would he reach him? Toothless knew they would be safer if they were both at the Academy, and it would be more fun. Because he was not officially accepted into the Academy, he had to wait outside of the Academy. Toothless might have waited, but he was unhappy about it, and it took a lot of convincing on Hiccup's part to calm him down enough to stay outside of the Academy. Toothless was able to remain outside of the Academy thanks to the fact that Hiccup went outside of the Academy to visit him each day. He only strayed far enough to search for fish in the river, letting Hiccup resolve the issue and also prepare other people over the fact that there might be a dragon living on campus.
How has it affected them? Toothless was very upset by the Mist, and it might have been noticed by other Vikings on Berk. He'll still be worried about the Mist, the thought often in the back of his mind. He'll be keeping a more watchful eye until he deems the Academy safe. However, he goes where Hiccup goes and he also thinks they might have a better chance of figuring out what to do here rather than back at Berk.

[There's spinning. A lot of awkward spinning. Is it a room? It's too hard to tell. Finally it stops, but that might not be a good thing. There's an exasperated snarl on the other end. Then, a pair of vivid, reptilian green eyes peak into the camera, dropping out of view. Okay, he got the thing to work, having watched Hiccup, and from a greater distance, others use the devices. At least, he thinks he got it to work. He can't ask anyone right now, but, no, he wouldn't even if he could. He's actually rather proud that he did this on his own.]

[Now what? He doesn't understand how this is going to be useful to him. He should probably just go outside, and leave it on. He can find a nice sunny spot full of grass and just wait it out. There is one thing he wishes to tell, so that less people will keep screaming "Dragon!" whenever they see him, along with some nicknames, because his name is his and he likes it most. You should at least learn his name. How will he...oh! He knows! He runs out of view, rummaging around with his head and making a mess of things. A few minutes later, and he comes back into view with a book in his mouth. The cover depicts a woman smiling all too blithely. He drops it unceremoniously onto the floor, giving the camera his own smile, sans teeth. He points to the spot where the book fell, then himself.]

[He hopes at least someone got that. Otherwise, his faith in this place will have significantly dropped. How humans can stand to communicate with these for long still escapes him, so without giving the communicator another look, he runs out.

He looks forward to some answers later.]

Toothless understood why Hiccup had chosen to enroll in the Academy. He did. It was--supposedly--safe, safer than what was going on at Berk. Sure, Toothless liked safe, if it meant that Hiccup wasn't in constant danger from the Outcasts and the Mist that left Toothless with a very bad, nagging unease. They could make their own danger and fun (and really, sometimes Toothless wondered about him, but he usually came up with the best ideas).

But a haven or not, this wasn't Berk, the routine everyone had going on so structured, that it made his mind run around in circles. Toothless already had a routine. Wake up, eat when everyone else eats, train and then do whatever they had planned or not planned throughout the day. How humans managed to go for hours of inside training, when the sun was bright outside and he had just found the softest patch of grass and there was still so much left to explore, baffled him. Hiccup was willing to do it though, so perhaps this training would be good for him. Somehow. Hiccup had been wrong before. How was staying inside a room far too bright going to help them do anything about the Mist? Overall, the Academy life was still new and strange to Toothless, but he was trying to adjust. He could see that Hiccup was too, along with people he hadn't bothered to meet.

Sometimes, though, Toothless couldn't overlook the strangeness. The crowds became too tight, the rooms seemed to shrink, and there were too many conversations to keep up with, too many actions to keep an eye on. When that happened, he felt as if he were itching all over under his skin and he needed to get out before he got too edgy. A nice flight that lasted a good few hours was usually enough to quell those feelings, but Toothless knew he couldn't just go barging into Hiccup's current class, urging him to go fly. He had tried that.

So, left to his own devices, Toothless took to wandering. Just about everywhere Toothless went, there were too many people the Night Fury didn't know. He skulked on by, until he came across one of his favorite buildings: the art building. It smelled terrible, but the things the students created out of a thought, a feeling, never ceased to amaze Toothless. Today, there was a class taking place outside. His whole body twitched as he raced over, skidding to a stop to remain the background. Colors became shapes, shapes flowing into objects, people, and places. Places Toothless himself had never even seen. Toothless watched their motions carefully, taking note of the instruments used. He would need something bigger before he could even think of replicating the same technique, but maybe he could try. Utterly entranced, Toothless didn't move from that spot for the next hour, tail swaying against the grass. He was content for now.
